Slithering into Fall

| Save the Snakes! Though we’ve always seen snakes slithering around the farm, this year our snake population seems to have exploded! We have at least one hanging around our greenhouse who we first spotted slithering its way underneath our seedling trays. We also spotted THREE curled up along our seed garden. As is the norm, our first reaction is to be startled, but a genuine curiosity and gratitude follow quickly behind. These snakes, which we believe to be Black Rat Snakes, tend to stay out of our way. They are non-venomous, like to hide in tall grass, under warm tarps, in the nooks and crannies of our seed trays or basically anywhere a mouse or rat could be nesting. Though they tend to give us the heebie jeebies if they start coming our way, we like to leave them alone. As their name suggests, they feed mostly on rodents which like to prey on our plants. Being a non-spray, sustainable growing farm, we accept snakes as part of our team. They are part of our natural ecosystem, keeping pest populations at a manageable level. We hope their presence can heighten the yield of our future greenhouse crops. They work alongside us toward our common goal of bringing delicious produce to your table, minus rodent bites! |
