SALE on Black Radishes!! If you have perused our online store or visited us at market within the last few months you may have noticed a particular veggie not normally seen at your neighborhood grocery store, the black radish. This last season we decided to add the “Schwarzer Runder” variety of black radish to our late fall and winter selection. The black radish gets its name from its tough black exterior though, once cut, you find it has a crisp white interior. Featuring a spicy, sharp, earthy taste that becomes milder as it is cooked, the black radish is the perfect addition to a salad or any dish needing a bit more spice. For an even milder flavor, you can take off the peel, where most of the spice is located. Though the Black Radish may seem new to you and me, it has actually been around since Ancient Egypt! This hardy fibrous root veggie was considered sacred to the Egyptians and was consumed every meal. Not only that, mixed with honey, this radish variety was commonly used to cure nearly any illness. If you’re feeling Egyptian and want to give these under-appreciated gems a chance, go to our online store and stock up before they are gone for the season! Don’t be afraid to buy too many either! Another benefit to these root veggies is their long shelf life! Keep your unwashed black radishes in an airtight container in your refrigerator’s crisper and they will last between one and three months. You heard that right! If you’re running out of fridge space, keep them submerged in sand in a cardboard box somewhere cool that never freezes, such as your garage and they will last just as long. Still unsure how to use them? Check out a recipe for black radish chips below! |
