The Tiniest Vegetable: Newsletter March 22
|Plant Your Garden
We are ramping up our planting! Every week we have more and more plants in the ground. We are also spending a lot of time preparing for plant sales. From Tomatoes to Rosemary, we are potting up hundreds of organic, healthy seedlings so you can take a small piece of our farm home with you. Check out our online store to purchase one for yourself!
|Microgreens: An Introduction
|One of our newest products by the farm in the last few years is our selection of Microgreens.
Microgreens are plants grown and harvested as seedlings. Varieties we grow are Pea Shoots, Radish Shoots and even Sunflower Shoots
Some benefits they showcase are:Although they are small, they are packed with nutrients even more so than their larger counterparts. They are stronger in flavor! Want to add a bit of punch to your salad? Add a radish sprout, trust us!They grow FAST! Our microgreens change week to week because that’s how fast they grow! Less than a week and we have a full harvest where as an average tomato plant can take up to 3 months! They take up little to no space. Whereas a row of eggplants will take up an entire 100 foot long bed, our microgreen harvest will only take up a single table in our greenhouse
This week we pulled our Dahlia tubers (pictured on left) out of their storage. During the winter, the dug up tubers are kept in tubs surrounded by woodchips in order to keep them dry. While in storage they grow new sprouts.
From there, we plant the sprouting tubers in beds we have prepared for them. A month or two later we get blooms of every color! Last year we only had half a bed of Dahlias to sell at market. This year we are expanding our Dahlia selection to two FULL beds.
These will go great with our new Flower CSA Ad-on! If you haven’t signed up for our Flower Bouquet CSA Ad-On, make sure you do soon before slots fill up! Click the link below to sign up now!!
